That One Item

UPDATE: I am really liking the idea of a pillow, now I just have to find someone to help me make it happen. Sewing is one of those things that I would love to do but just don't have the room to store items for another hobby. I will keep you updated and hopefully post pictures before Oliver is in college!

I know that those of you that read this blog are talented, smart, creative and full of ideas just waiting to shared, that is why I am turning to you. Have you ever had that one thing that you just couldn't part with. That adorable pair of shoes that you'd squeeze your toddlers feet into one last time, the outfit your baby came home in, that piece of jewelry handed down from grandma, etc. Well, we just don't have a lot of storage, I am very cut throat when it comes to keeping things that I don't need, will never wear, have been outgrown, the list goes on. However, there are a couple of things that seem very hard for me to pass onto the next person that can use it. This is my current piece that has gone into the donation pile and been pulled out at least three times now...It's not that special, it was bought last winter for Oliver only because I thought it was cute. There have been no special moments or occasions that he wore it for, it's just a sweater. A sweater that I loved him in. I love the colors, I love that it has a hood, I love that he liked wearing it (a huge bonus with my opinionated boy), I love the way it fit him and love the way he looked in it! He wore it one last time last week and the I could see that space between the bottom of the sleeve and his wrist and that other area between the bottom of the sweater and the top of his pants had just gotten too big to ignore.

This is where you guys come into play - what do I do with it? I have no reason to keep the sweater other than I loved to see Oliver in it. I have plenty of pictures of him wearing it (and now pictures of the sweater) but is there something else that I can do with it? A way to keep it around that wouldn't just be a sweater taking up space? I'd love to hear what you would do with it if you too were unable to give it to charity. The fate of the sweater is in your hands!

Another question to ask is: does anyone know where we can get a bigger sweater just like it?

those are great ideas...I was going to say make a blanket w/ it and other favorites that you've kept. But, I think I like the pillow one better...it would make a really cute pillow!
I just went through Brandon's clothes today to send to Goodwill. I had a "creative" question for you but now I can't remember what it is...I'll ask you later (and maybe all your friends, too! they are some smarties!!) :)

I'm not quite creative enough to do it, but I've always like the idea of a quilt or blanket made out of our favorite memories. It's bigger and you can add more of your favorites, opening up storage room, and knowing it'll be used lovingly.

I had the same ideas already mentioned but I do have to say that there are a handful of some clothing items for each of the kids that I have kept. Like Payton & Darla, I have them hanging in a corner of a closet in a clear garment bag. I too couldnt part with the cherry red fleece vest Payton wore to a sock hop in kindergarden. I have pics of him in it but for some reason this vest fit him for several years. It would fit Elijah now but its Paytons. These handful of items dont take up much space at all - you could even vaccum seal some of these for each child, for them to hand down to their own kids. I know it doesnt fix your storage issue but this sweater would probably be timeless in the sense the color scheme . . . it could probably be worn by Olivers son someday. Just a thought. I will admit girls are way worst - - - so many sentimental dresses. . . I had suggested to Alan maybe I would shorten the length on a number of them, using the scrap of fabris to make a doll dress out of each sentimental dress and then donate the big dress. . . but he was like "Well not that country Christmas dress, right? The one I picked out? And not the daddy daughter dance dress, right?" Stumped myself on what to do.

I really like the pillow idea- stuffing the dickens out of it and sewing it up...too cute! And super easy to do...

P.S. I can make him another sweater in those colors, the pattern would be a little different- not sure I could find one exactly like that, but could come close...

I would save it to decorate his (next) birthday table with, along with a baby picture or baby outfit--to show how he's grown. I got the idea from Likemerchantships.blogspot.com and it looked like this http://thetubofamily.shutterfly.com/2494 when I did it for Sean. Other than that perhaps making a picture of him wearing it into a Christmas ornament? I love to put knickknacks & sentimental pics on the tree.

I was going to leave a comment about how Janet would probably like a little somethin'-somethin' for coming up w/ her idea. But she beat me to it. :)

I think if you do make the sweater into a pillow, that you should post a picture of it (for all of us to enjoy) in Janet's honor...since she did make the suggestion.

You could so do the pillow thing yourself. I would try just a whipstitch (I think that is what they call it) with a coordinating ribbon. It would only require ribbon and a needle. Come on I know you can do it!
